When we were deciding, as part of our Expeleo association, where to head next, the choice fell on the Greek island of Skiathos. But forget hotel resorts and poolside drinks. Our \u201cSurvivor Edition\u201d had clear rules: one island, two people, six nights under the open sky, and over 100 kilometers in our legs. Mon\u010da and Kuba (that\u2019s us) packed only small backpacks, with half the space taken up by a sleeping bag and a mat, a few pieces of clothing, and swimwear. Somehow, we also managed to squeeze in one cool inflatable mattress, but otherwise we committed to absolute minimalism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It all started on Sunday after landing at Skiathos International Airport. We immediately stepped out of our comfort zone and turned into modern-day wanderers. To make it a real adrenaline experience, we went completely \u201cblind,\u201d without any preparation at all. The first moments were challenging. In town, we stocked up on water and food and tried to find our bearings in the intense heat. There were crowds everywhere, so we had to walk several kilometers to a small peninsula in the southeast. After dark, we nervously searched for a hidden beach to spend the night. After several unsuccessful attempts\u2014during which we even accidentally wandered into people\u2019s gardens\u2014we were surprised around 9 p.m. by discovering the deserted Nino\u2019s Beach, complete with sunbeds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Monday morning started with a quick wash in the sea and a big dose of kilometers. We had to pass through the touristy southern part of the island to reach the wilder and less populated northwest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On the way, we stopped at Paralia Kanapitsa and continued to Kolios Beach, where we thought we might find a place to sleep. Kuba went to check out the beach while I waited at a bus stop with all the backpacks. A local man started talking to me. He must have realized we were sleeping outdoors, because he immediately told me he wouldn\u2019t recommend staying on that beach. According to him, a lot of different people hang around there at night, and it might not be very safe. He even suggested a hidden beach where it would supposedly be better.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the end, we only showered at Kolios Beach and decided to move on to a more remote spot. We didn\u2019t take the man\u2019s advice\u2014who knows what kind of surprise might have been waiting for us there at night.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Another place we considered for the night was Small Banana Beach. At first glance, we loved it. It was absolutely beautiful, and we even found a perfect sleeping spot. Unfortunately, a pair of nudists had chosen the very same place and were enjoying a very intense romantic moment nearby. The name of the beach suddenly took on a whole new meaning. The lady was clearly searching very enthusiastically for a \u201csmall banana,\u201d and it didn\u2019t look like they were leaving anytime soon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So we had no choice but to keep going\u2014once again in the dark. After several more kilometers, we finally settled down at Krifi Ammos Beach. In the morning, we were woken by the sound of the sea and a view of an incredibly beautiful beach that made up for all the nighttime walking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The next day didn\u2019t go easy on us either. The forecast was calling for storms. We crossed another part of the island, stopped at Mandraki Elias Beach and Agistros, and after many kilometers reached Megalos Aselinos Beach around 5:30 p.m. It looked promising\u2014the storm was supposed to arrive in the early morning\u2014so we calmly prepared our sleeping spot and hoped to get at least some rest. But nature had other plans. Around 9 p.m., we saw massive flashes in the distance getting closer every minute. By 9:30, the storm was right on top of us, and we had to evacuate immediately. Luckily, there was a taverna on the beach with a large covered area where we managed to take shelter at the last moment. But it was far from peaceful. The wind slammed into the roof, things were banging everywhere, thunder echoed along the coast, and waves crashed against the shore with enormous force. Spending the night in that open shelter was very uncomfortable. We barely slept.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As soon as it was at least somewhat manageable around 6 a.m., we quickly packed up and left before anyone could spot us there. A tough climb awaited us along a trail that had likely been hit by a landslide, so we had to carve our own way through bushes. At that point, we had only the last deciliter of water left in our bottle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After finally making it back to civilization and \u201cwinning\u201d some much-needed drinks, we decided to treat ourselves to a small luxury after three days of survival mode. We went to eat at the Taverna Ligaries, which we can truly recommend. The food was excellent, and the staff very friendly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After the meal, we rested for a while at nearby Ligaries Beach and planned the next route and sleeping spot. On the map, we found a small chapel whose roof looked like a perfect place for the night, so we headed there. On the way, we stopped at Paralia Kechria for some snorkeling. It\u2019s a truly beautiful place and definitely worth visiting if you\u2019re on the island.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That night, we traded the beach for the roof of the Agios Alexandros chapel, which offered stunning views of the sea, the starry sky, and nearby Mount Olympus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On Thursday morning, we planned a route along the coast to Kastro and then across the hills toward the airport. But soon came the first disappointment. The castle and the taverna beneath it were closed. So we had made a detour for nothing and had to plan a new route over the Mitikas peak. I was absolutely \u201cthrilled\u201d about the new plan, as the vision of a cold drink and good food had vanished, and ahead of us was nothing but a big hill and a long climb. On the other hand, the ascent rewarded us with incredible views of the southern part of the island.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We then descended toward the Evangelistria monastery, where a small shop was marked on the map. The whole way, we were fantasizing about what we would buy, how we would finally eat properly and restock. Reality? No shop anywhere. Great! At least we cooled down for a while in the quiet of the monastery, caught our breath, and then continued several more kilometers downhill to a large supermarket in town.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When we finally got there, it felt like paradise. We filled our basket with all kinds of drinks and food, then, like the true wanderers we were, sat down with the basket on a bench outside and started feasting. After everything, we really didn\u2019t care. We restocked and set off for the last few kilometers to the beach, where our final two nights in the wild awaited us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The highlight of our journey came at Megas Gialos Beach, which looked like something out of a catalog. Crystal-clear water and not a soul in sight. But the idyll didn\u2019t last long. After leaving our things behind and walking around a rock with just our phones to scout for an even better sleeping spot, we didn\u2019t expect the return to be complicated. A herd of goats, led by large-horned males, had cut us off from our backpacks\u2014and their horns were intimidating even from a distance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We tried to act brave, waving sticks and hoping they would run away. No chance. The goats looked at us as if to say this was their territory. So what now? Our belongings on one side, us on the other, and a horned army in between. There was no choice but to risk going through the sea. In the end, we had to hold our phones above our heads and literally swim around the rock to get back to our things. The waves didn\u2019t make it any easier. We then spent another half hour standing in the water, waiting for the herd to move on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The beach was so beautiful that once the goats finally left, we decided to stay anyway. Using stones and ropes, we built our own \u201cfortress\u201d shelter. We went for a night swim and fell asleep with a sense of small victory\u2014though with a slight worry about whether our horned \u201cneighbors\u201d might return. In the end, the night was calm, we slept well, and the goats didn\u2019t come back.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On the final day, we decided to enjoy things a bit more like normal people. We hid our belongings under a pile of stones on our beach and went into town to relax. We spent the whole day resting, wandering the streets, and soaking in the atmosphere. At night, we returned to our beach\u2014after all, we couldn\u2019t just leave our carefully built shelter behind! It was our last night under the stars, and in the morning, only the trip to the airport and the journey home remained.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Saying goodbye was hard, and the experiences unforgettable. I would wish this kind of adventure for everyone. The feeling when your worries shrink to something as simple as \u201cDo I have something to drink and where will I sleep tonight?\u201d is incredibly liberating. It was in this discomfort that we found the greatest sense of freedom and felt truly present. Try it too\u2014before you forget what it feels like to be truly alive!<\/p>\n\n\n\n
